Papers of the Oliver family, 1807-1864.

Earlier correspondence centers around Benjamin Oliver and Lucy Oliver of Hanover and Albemarle counties, Va., The majority of the correspondence was generated by their daughters Ann Carter Oliver and Lucy Williamson Oliver Cocke. Most of it concerns news of family and friends, health and local events. There are many references to the family of John Hartwell Cocke including mention of his travels and the death of Louisa Maxwell Holmes Cocke. Of interest are letters about the burning of Hampton by the British in 1813, objections by citizens of Prince George in 1833 to the girls of Cedar Park School teaching in a colored Sunday School, a 4th of July celebration in Norfolk in 1840,local political rallies for the election of 1844, the experiments of Carter Braxton and Corbin Braxton, 1842-1843,with the McCormick reaper, and an 1847 letter detailing problems with the William and Mary faculty. Correspondents include Sally Faulcon Cocke Brent, Sally Elizabeth Courtney Bowdoin Cocke, and Cary Charles Cocke.
